LA FIBRA
La Alpaca. Estos animales, que viven entre 3.000 y 4.500 metros sobre el nivel del mar en la Cordillera de los Andes, tienen una capacidad desmesurada para hacer frente a variaciones climáticas de hasta 30 grados entre el día y la noche. Criado por los Incas y considerado el animal de los dioses, existen dos tipos: la Huacaya y el Suri.
The Suri has an atypical appearance as their fur hangs down to form the long dreadlocks. Their wool is shinier, wavier and above all, rarer than the huacaya’s. The Huacaya’s fur has the appearance of a voluminous-looking fibere.
The incas highly valued and esteemed alpaca fiber. They considered their fiber as “the fiber of the gods” which were only reserved for the emperor and nobility. It was not only a symbol of wealth but of power as well.
Hoy en día, 93% de fibra de alpaca en el mercado es la fibra de Huacaya porque es la más extendida ya que representan 98% de la población mundial de alpacas.
Fibra de alpaca. La esquila y la recolección de fibra se realizan una vez al año. De hecho, cuando llega la primavera y se acercan los primeros calores, la alpaca se esquila, dándole tiempo a la fibra para que vuelva a crecer y se renueve para la siguiente temporada.
La fibra de alpaca es la lana más fina que existe, mide entre 16 y 25 micrómetros de diámetro, lo que la hace sentir ligera y cálida durante todas las estaciones.
One of the special features of alpaca is the wide variety of natural colors it comes in. As a matter of fact, there are no fewer than 22 colors to choose from, ranging from white and black to gray and brown.
Finally, this very rare fiber: there are 1,000 times fewer alpacas in the world than sheep. Moreover, baby alpacas account for only 10% of each shearing, and royal alpacas for only 1%. Baby alpaca fiber refers to a one-year-old alpaca and is related to the thickness of the fiber. Located underside of the animal’s neck, it is extremely soft and is considered a luxurious fiber.
Sus características. La fibra de alpaca es bien conocida por sus excelentes atributos:
- Higroscópico significa que absorbe la humedad ambiental muy lentamente.
- Sin pilling
- No retiene olores ni polvo.
- Protege contra los ácaros del polvo.
- No inflamable porque no retiene la combustión y resiste las proyecciones de partículas fundidas.
- Durable porque la estructura de fibra de alpaca es más duradera para la confección de prendas.
- Resistente gracias a la alta elasticidad de la fibra.
anécdota loca, Gracias a sus propiedades excepcionales, la NASA decidió elegir la fibra de alpaca para vestir a sus cosmonautas en la misión Apolo 11. De hecho, la fibra de alpaca cumplía todos los requisitos de lo que necesitaban: luz, Termorregulador, cálido y apto para todo tipo de pieles.
Una fibra ecológica. Las alpacas son consideradas “animales ecológicos”, porque no contaminan ni arrancan la vegetación.
Moreover, they do not damage their pastures, as their feet have no hoofs, but rather nails with small cushion, enabling them to enjoy their food in abundance all year round, without interruption or adding any chemicals.
Furthermore, when they eat, they do not uproot the grasses they consume, which means they do not alter the surrounding biodiversity. Alpaca fiber requieres no chemical treatment for weaving, and the diversity of hues offered by this animal is so vast that, in most cases, no dyes are added to the fiber which means that it remains biodegrable.
Finalmente, gracias a la cantidad de fibra por alpaca, una sola alpaca puede producir 4 veces más que una sola oveja.
